Honestly, there’s no single answer. I’ve seen a cheap resin bench turn chalky after one intense summer, while a powder-coated aluminum bench still looked nearly new after five years in the same spot. The real answer depends almost entirely on what your bench is made of and how it’s finished.
Here’s a realistic breakdown by material:
- Untreated or oiled wood: Expect the surface to start turning gray or silvery within 2–6 months in all-day sun. A full weathered look usually takes 1–2 years. The wood itself can stay strong; it’s mainly a color change.
- Painted or stained wood: Gloss dulls in 3–6 months. Noticeable fading or chalkiness often appears within 1–3 years, especially with dark colors and low-quality exterior paint.
- Plastic, resin, or PVC benches: Most fade or turn chalky within 6 months–2 years. Cheap PVC can show obvious whitening after one hot, sunny season.
- Metal benches: Standard painted steel or wrought iron may fade, dull, or start chalking in 1–3 years. Powder-coated aluminum is far more UV-stable and often lasts 5–10+ years with only minor change.
- Fabric sling or cushion benches: Cheap polyester can fade in one summer. Solution-dyed acrylic fabrics like Sunbrella often hold color for 3–5+ years before fading becomes obvious.
Why the range? Direct sunlight isn’t the only factor. UV intensity is much stronger at high altitude and in desert or tropical regions. Dark colors absorb more solar energy, so they tend to fade faster than lighter colors. Moisture, pollution, salt air, and even pollen sitting on the surface can speed up oxidation and make fading worse.
If you want the longest color life, choose UV-stable materials: HDPE lumber, powder-coated aluminum, or solution-dyed fabric. For wood benches, apply a quality UV-blocking sealer or exterior oil once or twice a year. Keep the bench clean, and if possible move it into shade or use a cover during the harshest summer months. You won’t stop sun damage completely, but you can easily double or triple the time before it becomes noticeable.
So as a rule of thumb: a budget bench in all-day sun usually shows clear fading within 12–18 months. A premium bench designed for outdoor exposure may keep its color for 5–10 years, sometimes longer.
