Common Problems and Effective Solutions for urban benches

How do I pick the right color for a street bench so it doesn’t fade too quickly in the sun?

The short answer? Pick a light to mid-tone color with a UV-stable powder coat finish. Dark, highly saturated colors absorb more UV and heat, so they tend to chalk, oxidize, and fade faster. Soft whites, warm sands, light grays, sage, and muted blues usually hold up better visually because they reflect more sunlight and hide early fading.

But color alone won’t save a bench. The real secret is the coating system. For metal benches, look for polyester or super-durable polyester powder coating rated for exterior use. Ask if the pigment is UV-stabilized or if the finish meets AAMA 2604 or 2605 standards. That matters more than whether you choose beige or black.

If you want a darker color for branding or contrast, you can still do it. Just specify a high-performance powder coat with UV inhibitors, and expect to do light maintenance a year or two earlier than with a light color. Red, bright yellow, and deep blue are the fastest to fade, especially in cheap liquid paint.

For wood benches, the color is mostly stain or paint. Use exterior-grade UV-blocking stain, not standard paint. Semi-transparent stains fade more gracefully than solid film paints because there is no thick layer to peel. If you paint wood, choose lighter shades and refresh the topcoat more often.

For plastic or recycled lumber, choose UV-stabilized HDPE or poly lumber with molded-in color. Avoid thin painted plastic. Molded-in color won’t peel, but even UV-stabilized plastic will lighten slightly over a few years, so lighter colors again hide it better.

Also think about the location. A bench in Arizona full afternoon sun needs a more conservative finish than a bench under trees in Seattle. If you cannot change the color, add shade, use a protective clear coat with UV inhibitors, or plan a recoat schedule.

My practical rule: choose a light neutral or muted earth tone, confirm the finish is UV-stable powder coat or exterior stain, and avoid cheap bright pigments. That combination will look good far longer than a trendy dark color with standard paint.
