Common Problems and Effective Solutions for urban benches

Do these street benches have a textured surface to prevent sliding when it’s icy?

Yes—many modern street benches do have a textured surface, but the honest answer is that it depends on the bench. Most public benches use powder-coated steel slats with a fine anti-slip grit, grooved recycled plastic planks, or wood with a brushed or ribbed finish. These textures are designed mainly for wet weather, but they also help prevent sliding on ice when the layer is thin. I’ve sat on enough frost-covered benches to know that even a little texture helps, but it is not magic. If the ice is thick and smooth, it can fill in the grooves and create a slick layer over the whole surface. No bench texture completely stops sliding under those conditions. If you are choosing or maintaining street benches in a cold climate, look for slip-resistant or anti-slip models, and consider adding grip tape or rubber strips to older smooth slats. Regular snow and ice removal makes a bigger difference than texture alone.
