Yes, there is—and it is more common than many people realize. Urban benches with built-in solar chargers are often called solar benches, smart benches, or solar charging stations. They look like normal outdoor seating, but they have a photovoltaic panel on the seat surface, armrest, or a connected canopy. The panel collects sunlight during the day and stores it in an integrated battery, so you can plug in a phone or other USB device even after sunset.
Some well-known examples include the Soofa Bench, which was one of the first to appear in US cities like Boston and New York, and the Steora bench by Include, which is popular in European public spaces. EnGoPlanet and Strawberry Energy also produce versions that add LED lighting, Wi-Fi, air quality sensors, and even wireless charging pads.
How do you actually use one? Most benches have a USB-A or USB-C port on the side or under the seat. Some models support Qi wireless charging if you place your phone on a marked area. Charging speed is usually similar to a standard wall adapter, though it depends on battery level and sunlight.
Where can you find them? They are installed in parks, transit stops, university campuses, shopping streets, and smart city pilot areas. If you are looking for one near you, search for “solar bench near me” or check your city’s smart city project page. Not every bench has a charger, so look for a small solar panel, a USB icon, or a brand name like Soofa or Steora.
Are they worth it? For public spaces, yes. They provide free off-grid charging, encourage people to stay outdoors, and reduce the need for electrical wiring. For users, the main downside is slower charging when the battery is low or the sky is overcast. Still, if you spot one while your phone is at 10%, it can be a very useful piece of street furniture.
