I completely understand the worry—splinters from outdoor furniture can turn a relaxing afternoon into a painful one. The short answer is yes: our wooden outdoor benches are sanded smooth before they leave our workshop, and we pay special attention to all the surfaces your skin actually touches.
We start with kiln-dried hardwood, which is less likely to warp or develop raised grain than green wood. Once the bench is assembled, each piece goes through a multi-stage sanding process. We begin with a medium grit to remove rough mill marks and any sharp edges, then move to a fine grit to create a smooth, even surface. The seat, backrest, armrests, and especially the front edge of the seat are hand-sanded and checked by touch before finishing.
After sanding, we apply a weather-resistant outdoor sealant or natural oil finish. This does two things: it helps lock down the wood fibers so they are less likely to lift and feel fuzzy later, and it adds a layer of protection against moisture and sun. The result is a bench that feels comfortable to sit on with bare legs or rest your hands on without worrying about catching a splinter.
That said, wood is a natural material and it lives outdoors. Over time, sun, rain, and temperature changes can cause small cracks or raised grain, especially if the bench is left unprotected through harsh seasons. This does not mean the bench is unsafe, but a quick touch-up with fine sandpaper and a fresh coat of sealer once a year will keep it silky smooth. We also recommend checking the bench at the start of each season, just as you would with a deck or wooden railing.
If you ever receive a bench that does not feel smooth to you, please reach out. We would rather replace or refinish it than have you worry about splinters. But for most customers, the first thing they notice when they run a hand over our benches is how smooth and warm the wood feels—not rough or sharp.
So yes, you can sit, lean back, and let kids climb on without the usual splinter anxiety. That smoothness is a big part of why people choose our wooden outdoor benches in the first place.
