Common Problems and Effective Solutions for urban benches

I’m allergic to certain woods—are your park benches made from hypoallergenic materials?

I completely understand your concern—finding out a park bench might trigger your allergies can turn a relaxing afternoon into a stressful guessing game. Let me give you a direct, honest answer based on how our benches are actually made.

First, no wood is truly 100% hypoallergenic for everyone. That said, we deliberately avoid the most common allergenic woods like western red cedar, teak, and rosewood. These species contain natural oils and proteins (like plicatic acid in cedar) that frequently cause skin irritation or respiratory reactions. Instead, our standard park benches use heat-treated white oak or thermally modified ash. The heating process breaks down many of the volatile organic compounds and proteins that trigger allergic responses, making them far less reactive than raw softwoods.

We also apply a low-VOC, water-based polyurethane sealant that creates a physical barrier between your skin and the wood fibers. This coating is cured for at least 72 hours before installation, which significantly reduces surface allergens. However, if you have a severe wood allergy, I’d still recommend sitting on a jacket or blanket as a precaution—no outdoor bench can guarantee zero exposure to wind-blown pollen, mold spores, or dust that settles on the surface.

For the most sensitive individuals, we’ve installed powder-coated aluminum benches in select high-traffic areas. These are completely wood-free and easier to wipe clean. You can identify them by their darker charcoal finish and slightly cooler touch. If you’re planning a visit, feel free to call the park office ahead of time—we’ll point you to the nearest metal bench or the bench with the freshest sealant.

In short: our benches are made from low-allergen, thermally modified hardwoods with a sealed surface, but they are not certified “hypoallergenic.” For mild to moderate wood allergies, you’ll likely be fine. For severe reactions, bring a barrier cloth or choose one of our aluminum benches. Your comfort and safety matter more than the aesthetics of raw timber.
