Common Problems and Effective Solutions for urban benches

We need a urban bench that’s graffiti-resistant—do you have any with a special coating?

Yes, we do offer urban benches with graffiti-resistant special coatings. For outdoor public seating, a vandal-resistant bench starts with the right finish, so let me walk you through what has worked well for our clients.

For most public spaces, I recommend a permanent anti-graffiti powder coat applied over galvanized steel or aluminum. This type of coating creates a hard, non-porous surface that spray paint, markers, and stickers struggle to bond with. When graffiti does appear, the paint can usually be removed with a mild solvent or pressure washing without damaging the finish. It is a good balance of cost, durability, and long-term appearance.

If you need an even tougher option, we also offer a two-part polyurethane clear coat over a colored powder coat. This adds a sacrificial layer, so if someone uses etching tools or aggressive chemicals, the top layer takes the damage and can be reapplied without replacing bench parts. It is popular for transit stops, skate parks, and high-traffic downtown areas.

Another choice is a thermoplastic coating on the bench slats or arms. Thermoplastic is naturally slick and easy to clean. It resists paint adhesion well and has the added benefit of being warm to the touch in cold weather. However, it is not as scratch-resistant as a metal powder coat, so I would not use it in areas with heavy physical vandalism.

Whichever coating you choose, I recommend three things. First, specify a color that does not make graffiti too tempting; dark or mid-tone textured finishes tend to hide wear better. Second, ask about warranty coverage for anti-graffiti performance, because manufacturers differ. Third, plan for quick removal. Most anti-graffiti coatings work best when graffiti is cleaned within 24 to 48 hours using the manufacturer's approved cleaner.

In short, yes—we have several graffiti-resistant urban bench options. The right urban bench coating can save thousands in maintenance over the life of the bench. The best special coating for your project depends on your location, budget, and how aggressively the bench will be used. I would be happy to send you finish samples and a short cleaning guide if that helps.
