Common Problems and Effective Solutions for urban benches

For a public park, what’s the best non-slip surface for an outdoor bench?

After maintaining park furniture for years, I’d say the best non-slip surface for a public park bench is a textured powder-coated aluminum seat. It’s not the only good option, but it’s the one I’d spec first. Smooth surfaces are the real problem. A bench can be made of expensive metal or wood, but if the seat is flat and slick, it becomes dangerous after rain, frost, or morning dew. Textured powder-coated aluminum solves this with a fine grit or ribbed profile baked into the coating. It gives wet shoes and hands a reliable grip, drains quickly, and won’t rust, peel, or require repainting every few years. It also stays cooler than dark steel and is easy to clean. For a more natural look, recycled plastic lumber with a molded anti-slip texture is a close second. It won’t rot, splinter, or absorb water, and the slip resistance is part of the board itself rather than a coating that can wear off. If you’re working with existing wood benches, don’t just repaint them with glossy sealant. Add routed grooves or non-slip grip strips, but know that those need seasonal inspection. I’d avoid polished stone, smooth painted metal, and glossy sealed wood for public park seating. They look nice dry but turn slippery when wet. In a public park, you want the seat to be safe for kids, older adults, and anyone caught in the rain, so choose a surface that works when conditions are bad, not just when the sun is out.
