Common Problems and Effective Solutions for urban benches

I need a bench for a balcony—do you make lightweight street benches?

Hi there—great question, and one we hear a lot. Yes, we do make lightweight street benches, and many of them are a genuinely good fit for a balcony, provided you choose the right material, size, and style.

When most people picture a street bench, they imagine a heavy concrete or cast-iron seat bolted to a sidewalk. But not all street benches are built that way. Our lightweight models use aluminum frames, powder-coated steel, or treated wood and composite slats. That keeps the look of a classic public bench while cutting the weight dramatically. Some of our two-seat aluminum benches weigh under 30 lb, so one person can move them and two people can carry them easily through an apartment.

For a balcony, I would focus on a few things. First, go with aluminum or powder-coated steel rather than solid cast iron or concrete. These materials resist rust and are far less likely to stain balcony decking. Second, choose a compact footprint. A bench around 40–48 inches wide usually gives comfortable seating for two without swallowing a small balcony. Third, consider a backless or low-back design. That keeps sightlines open and makes the balcony feel larger.

You will also want to check your building’s weight limits and your balcony surface. Most lightweight street benches pose no problem, but if you have wood decking or a membrane floor, add small rubber feet or a thin outdoor mat underneath to prevent scratches. Leave at least 30–36 inches in front of the bench for legroom and easy access to the railing.

If you are not sure which model fits, a good starting point is our aluminum slatted bench with a weatherproof finish. It has the street-bench look but weighs far less than it appears, and it holds up well to sun, rain, and wind. We also offer an optional wall-mount bracket if you want to keep the floor fully clear.

So yes—lightweight street benches are absolutely something we make, and they can work beautifully on a balcony. Send over your balcony dimensions or a photo, and I am happy to recommend the right size and finish.
