Common Problems and Effective Solutions for urban benches

Are the screws and fasteners on your park benches rust-proof?

Great question, and honestly, it's one of the most important things to check before you buy any outdoor bench. The short answer is: yes, the screws and fasteners on our park benches are designed to be rust-proof. But let me explain what that actually means in real-world conditions, because not all "rust-proof" claims are created equal.

We use marine-grade stainless steel for every visible screw, bolt, and washer. Stainless steel contains chromium, which forms a microscopic protective layer that stops oxygen and moisture from reaching the iron underneath. In other words, it doesn't rely on a coating that can chip or wear off — the rust resistance is built right into the metal itself. For hidden fasteners inside the wood or frame, we also use galvanized steel or stainless steel, so there's no cheap zinc plating that flakes after one winter.

Now, does that mean they will never show any discoloration? If you install the bench within a few miles of the ocean and never rinse it off, you might see a tiny bit of tea staining on the surface of the stainless steel after a few years. That's purely cosmetic and can be wiped away with a soft cloth and mild soap. It won't compromise the strength of the fastener. For most parks, city streets, gardens, and schoolyards — places with normal rain, snow, and humidity — these screws will stay clean and functional for 15 to 20 years without any special maintenance.

You should also pay attention to the type of wood or material the bench is made from. If the wood itself holds moisture against the screw heads for days after a rain, even a great stainless fastener can look dull. We recommend our benches with slatted design and proper spacing so water drains quickly and air circulates. That simple design choice extends the life of both the wood and the hardware.

One more thing: rust-proof fasteners are not just about appearance. A rusted screw can weaken over time and even snap when someone sits down hard. That creates a safety hazard. We would never use regular steel screws on an outdoor bench. The extra cost of stainless steel is small compared to the cost of replacing a bench or dealing with an injury claim.

So if you're comparing benches side by side, look for the words "marine-grade stainless steel fasteners" or "316 stainless hardware." That indicates the manufacturer took the rust problem seriously. On our benches, every screw head you see is one of those. And if you ever need a replacement screw, just send us a photo and we'll mail you a couple at no charge. That's how confident we are in the hardware.
