Common Problems and Effective Solutions for urban benches

How do your street benches perform in terms of heat retention on a cold morning?

Great question — this is one of the most common questions we get about outdoor seating in cooler climates. The short answer is that our street benches are not heated, so they won't actively warm you up on a cold morning. But their heat retention — or more accurately, how cold they feel when you sit down — depends heavily on the bench materials we use.

Metal conducts heat away from your body very quickly, which is why an all-aluminum or all-steel bench can feel shockingly cold on a frosty morning. That's why most of our benches combine a strong metal frame with seat and back slats made from wood, recycled plastic, or composite. These materials have much lower thermal conductivity than metal, so they don't pull heat from your body as aggressively. In practical terms, a wooden or recycled plastic seat will feel noticeably less cold than a metal one at the same air temperature.

Wood is a natural insulator. It warms up slowly in the sun but also does not get as icy to the touch as metal. Our hardwood slats, for example, are dense enough to handle weather but still feel far more forgiving on a cold morning. Recycled plastic is another good performer. It resists frost and moisture, so it rarely develops that slick, freezing surface you sometimes get on metal or stone. Composite slats behave similarly, offering wood-like comfort with extra durability.

Color and finish also play a role. Darker surfaces absorb more infrared energy from low winter sun, so a dark green, brown, or black bench can warm up a few degrees faster than a light gray or white one. Textured or matte finishes hold less visible frost than smooth, polished metal, which improves both comfort and slip resistance on cold mornings.

If you are choosing outdoor seating specifically for a cold climate, I would recommend looking at models with full wood or recycled plastic seating surfaces rather than perforated metal or all-metal designs. Orienting benches toward the morning sun also makes a real difference. They won't become cozy like an indoor chair, but they will be far more comfortable than a typical metal bench.

We do not currently offer electrically heated street benches, but if cold-weather comfort is a top priority, our recycled plastic and timber options are the closest you'll get to a warm, low-conductivity sitting surface without adding power or maintenance. Hope that helps you picture how they perform on a cold morning.
