Short answer: some urban benches are designed to discourage skateboard tricks, but not all—and the best designs do it without making people feel unwelcome. Our own range focuses on public seating that lasts, so we use passive skateboard deterrent details rather than aggressive anti-skate hardware.
Why address skateboarding at all? Board slides and grinds can chip powder coating, dent slats, loosen bolts, and create sharp edges. That leads to higher maintenance costs and benches that look worn out after one season. A skateboard-resistant design is less about anti-skater sentiment and more about protecting public furniture for everyone.
On many of our urban benches, you’ll notice three low-key features. First, armrests or center rails break up long flat edges, so a deck has no smooth continuous line to slide along. Second, slatted or ribbed seats make the surface uneven enough to be unappealing for tricks but still comfortable for sitting. Third, rounded profiles and chamfered corners reduce the sharp lip that skateboard trucks like to grind.
Some clients ask for more explicit skateboard deterrent details, such as raised knuckles, angled edges, or tighter slat spacing. We can add those in custom orders. However, we stay away from hostile architecture like spikes, sharp metal fins, or awkward bars under the seat. Those create access issues and can hurt ordinary users, especially children or people with disabilities.
If you are selecting street furniture for a skate-heavy plaza, transit stop, or downtown sidewalk, look for a bench with a center armrest, slatted top, and a smooth but rounded edge. That combination usually does the job without turning the bench into a statement. Durable finishes also help: a tough powder coat or stainless steel surface resists scratches and wax buildup.
So, are our urban benches designed to discourage skateboard tricks? Yes—but subtly. They are built to remain comfortable public seating while reducing the most common skate damage. If you need something stronger, we can recommend our anti-skate bench models or custom options for your site.
