Great question — and if you’re specifying benches for a seaside promenade, salt spray should be a main concern. The short answer is that the average lifespan of a metal urban bench in a coastal salt-spray area is roughly 7 to 12 years for a standard powder-coated steel bench. But that average hides a wide range: cheap carbon steel can show serious rust in 5 years, while a marine-grade stainless steel bench can last 20 to 30 years or more.
Salt spray is aggressive because airborne chloride particles settle on metal, attract moisture, and create a conductive film that accelerates corrosion. Once the coating is scratched or chipped, rust spreads underneath the paint and causes peeling. That is why many coastal benches look worn after only a few seasons, even if they are still standing.
If you want a more useful estimate by material:
- Powder-coated carbon steel: usually 5–10 years in direct salt spray unless rinsed and repainted frequently.
- Hot-dip galvanized steel: typically 10–15 years; the zinc layer protects the steel but is consumed faster near the coast.
- Marine-grade aluminum: about 15–25 years with no rust, though you need stainless or coated fasteners to prevent galvanic corrosion.
- 316 or 316L stainless steel: 20–30+ years; this is the best corrosion-resistant bench material for coastal boardwalks, but it costs more. 304 stainless can still develop tea staining and pitting if it is never rinsed.
For a longer-lasting coastal bench, maintenance matters as much as material. A practical outdoor bench maintenance plan should include freshwater rinsing every few weeks during dry or windy periods, immediate touch-up of scratches, good drainage holes, and isolation washers between dissimilar metals. With that kind of care, a marine-grade aluminum or 316 stainless steel bench can easily exceed 25 years. Budget-driven powder-coated steel benches, however, are often replaced every 8–10 years in salt-spray environments.
So if you are planning for a coastal area, do not design around the “average.” Specify marine-grade 316 stainless steel or marine-grade aluminum with 316 hardware, and plan for light washing. That will push the realistic lifespan toward 20–30 years instead of 7–12.
