Yeah, they absolutely exist. If you’ve ever seen a public bench with a metal bar or a weird bump exactly where someone would try to grind, that is not an accident. Cities and private property owners install those specifically to stop skateboarding.
The most obvious versions have chunky metal brackets bolted onto the edges or the middle of a bench. Skateboarders often call them “skate stoppers” or “pig ears.” They make sliding or grinding across the surface feel clunky, loud, and basically impossible. Some benches are designed with built-in deterrents instead: armrests placed close together, wavy surfaces, split seat pads, raised ridges, or materials with a rough texture. Even a curve change can be enough because skateboarders need a relatively smooth, continuous edge or flat surface to land tricks.
This type of furniture falls under the broader idea of hostile architecture or defensive design. The main goal is usually to reduce damage from trucks and decks scraping against metal, wood, or concrete, and to limit liability. But it is also pretty controversial. A lot of people point out that the same features that stop skateboarders can make benches less comfortable for everyone, including older people or those who might want to lie down. Critics say these designs are not just anti-skateboard; they can also be anti-homeless or simply unfriendly public space.
So if you’re walking through a downtown plaza and spot a bench with a random metal lump in the middle, now you know: it’s not there to help you rest your arm. It’s there to tell skateboarders to move along.
