Great question—and you’re right to check before buying. The typical outdoor bench height is about 17 to 19 inches (43–48 cm), and 18 inches (46 cm) is the most common standard bench seat height. That works fine for average heights, but if you’re tall, especially over 6’2”, a standard bench can feel a little low.
For tall people, the two big issues are knee angle and seat depth. When a seat is low, your knees end up higher than your hips, which puts more strain on your lower back and makes standing up feel awkward. A shallow seat can also make long sitting uncomfortable because there’s less support under your thighs.
If you’re tall, look for ergonomic outdoor seating with a seat height closer to 19–20 inches and a seat depth of at least 17–19 inches. A backrest and armrests help a lot, too, because they give you leverage when you stand up and support a longer torso. Benches without armrests can actually be more forgiving for very tall legs because you can sit a bit farther forward or stretch out.
So, will a typical outdoor bench be comfortable for tall people? It can be for short periods, but for everyday use, you’ll probably be happier with a taller, deeper bench—or a custom build with added leg height.
