Common Problems and Effective Solutions for urban benches

What’s the warranty on an urban bench if the wood splits within a year?

If the wood on your urban bench splits within the first year, the short answer is that it should be covered under warranty in most cases, as long as the damage is from a manufacturing defect or normal use and not from misuse, vandalism, or improper installation. Urban benches used in streets, parks, transit stops, and commercial areas usually carry warranties on wood components that range from one to five years, depending on the manufacturer.

A typical wood warranty covers structural splitting, cracking, warping, or delamination caused by defects in materials or workmanship. It may also cover hardware failures that cause the wood to split. It does not usually cover surface checks that do not affect strength, normal weathering or color change, damage from impacts or vandalism, modifications, or failure to follow care and installation instructions.

If the split is deep, runs through the slat, or makes the bench unsafe, start documenting it while the bench is still under warranty. Take clear photos and video showing the crack, the whole slat, and the overall bench. Record the purchase date, installation date, and how the bench has been used. Then contact the supplier or manufacturer and ask for the specific warranty terms. In many cases they will send replacement wood slats rather than replacing the entire bench.

If the manufacturer says the crack is normal wood movement, compare that explanation with the warranty language. A small surface check is normal, but a deep structural split in a bench that is less than a year old is not. Politely push back with photos and a written explanation of the defect.

For benches bought for public or commercial projects, the contractor or distributor may handle the warranty. Keep the original invoice, purchase order, or delivery receipt because the warranty period usually starts on the delivery or installation date, not the manufacture date.

If the bench was custom-made or came from a smaller workshop, warranty terms can be shorter, but most reputable makers will still repair or replace a clearly defective wood component within the first year. A new urban bench should not have split wood. Unless the damage was caused by misuse, you have a strong case for a free repair, replacement slat, or replacement bench.
