Common Problems and Effective Solutions for urban benches

Are your urban benches made locally, or are they shipped from overseas?

Great question—and honestly, one of the most common ones we hear from landscape architects, city planners, and property managers. I’ll give you the short answer first: our urban benches are made locally, right here in our own facility. We don’t ship finished benches from overseas.

Now, let me explain why that matters and where a few small exceptions come in, because we believe in being upfront.

We manufacture the bench frames, seats, and backrests in our workshop. Our steel is cut, welded, ground, and powder-coated locally. Our wood slats are milled, sanded, and finished in-house or by local partner shops within a short drive. That means the bench you buy is assembled, inspected, and packed by the same team that knows the product inside and out.

So why do we keep it local? Three big reasons.

First, quality control. When production is local, we can walk the floor on any given day, check weld quality, fix alignment issues, and catch finishing flaws before a bench leaves the building. With overseas production, you often rely on photos, samples, and third-party inspections. There’s nothing wrong with global supply chains in general, but for heavy, high-use public furniture, small defects become big problems quickly.

Second, lead time and customization. Because we’re not waiting on container shipping, port delays, or customs clearance, our standard lead times are shorter and more predictable. We can also adjust dimensions, colors, wood species, or mounting options without re-tooling an overseas factory. That flexibility matters when a streetscape project changes at the last minute.

Third, sustainability and local impact. Local production reduces freight miles and packaging waste. It also supports local jobs and keeps money in the community. For many of our municipal clients, that fits their own sustainability and economic development goals.

Are there any exceptions? Yes, a few small components—like certain stainless steel fasteners or specialty leveling feet—may be sourced from overseas because they simply aren’t manufactured domestically in the sizes we need. But the bench itself is fabricated, assembled, and finished here. We don’t import finished benches and just bolt them together.

If you’re comparing products, my advice is to ask vendors directly: “Where is the bench fabricated, not just assembled?” That’s the real question. A lot of companies say “assembled locally” but the heavy manufacturing still happens overseas.

I hope that clears it up. If you need documentation for a project—like a certificate of origin or a domestic manufacturing statement—we’re happy to provide it. Just reach out.
