Common Problems and Effective Solutions for urban benches

How do your street benches perform in extreme heat—do the materials warp?

Thanks for reaching out—that's a great question, and honestly one we get a lot from customers in hot climates like Arizona, Texas, or southern Spain. The short answer: our street benches are specifically engineered to handle extreme heat without warping, but it depends on which material you're looking at. Let me break it down for you.

For our metal benches, we use heavy-gauge powder-coated steel or aluminum. Steel does expand slightly when it gets really hot, but warping only happens if the metal is too thin, poorly welded, or installed without any movement allowance. That's why we build in small expansion gaps at the joints and use thicker gauge tubing than typical residential furniture. On a 110°F (43°C) day, the surface will be hot to the touch, but the structure stays flat and true. The powder coating is also heat-cured during manufacturing, so it won't peel or bubble under direct sun. Aluminum expands more than steel, but it's also more flexible—our anodized aluminum slats have channeled mounting slots that let them slide a few millimeters without buckling.

For our HDPE (high-density polyethylene) lumber benches—the recycled plastic that looks like wood—heat performance is actually a strong point. HDPE has a softening point around 260°F (127°C), which is far beyond any normal outdoor ambient temperature. It does expand and contract with temperature changes, but we combat that by using stainless steel fasteners through oversized, slotted holes. This lets each board expand lengthwise without pushing against its neighbors, so you won't see bowing, cupping, or end-splitting even after years of brutal summers. We've tested these benches in Death Valley and in Dubai parking lots, and the slats stay dead flat.

One thing I should mention: real wood benches—like teak or ipe—are beautiful, but they absolutely can warp or crack in extreme heat, especially if they dry out unevenly. That's why we don't recommend raw timber for fully exposed desert locations unless the customer accepts some natural movement. Our composite and metal options are always the better bet for max heat.

So to directly answer your question: no, our standard street bench materials do not warp under extreme heat. They're designed with thermal expansion in mind, and we back that up with a 10-year warranty against structural deformation. If you've got a specific project location in mind, tell me the peak summer temps and I can recommend the best material combo for you.
