Yes, I get that worry—especially for public seating where people sit, lean, and run their hands along the surface without thinking. Our urban benches are planed smooth on all sides, not just the visible seat top. We machine-plane every slat, rail, and brace that could be touched, including the underside edges, armrest returns, and the backs of the legs near the seat. After planing, each piece goes through a sanding pass and a hand-check before assembly. We also soften the edges just enough to remove sharp corners, but not so much that the bench loses its clean, modern lines.
The finish matters too. We use a clear exterior-grade sealant or paint system depending on the range, and we inspect for raised grain or rough spots before packing. For hardwood options like oak or thermally modified ash, the planing closes the surface grain and reduces the chance of splinters forming later. With softwoods like pine, we specify tighter grain boards and reject any piece that shows tear-out.
For bench safety in high-traffic areas, I always recommend the smooth-touch finish option. It adds a final sanding grit and a wax-free buffing pass that makes the wood feel almost polished. Even under direct sun and rain, smooth wooden benches in our public range stay comfortable to bare skin.
One thing to be realistic about: wood is a natural material. We cannot promise a tree will never move, check, or develop a raised sliver years later. But our design choices—planing all sides, sealing end grain, and using proper fasteners—minimize that risk. Most clients are surprised at how smooth the underside is when they run a hand underneath the seat.
