Common Problems and Effective Solutions for urban benches

Have you tested these street benches for resistance to extreme cold and snow?

Yes, we have—and we didn’t stop at a quick temperature check. Every street bench we sell for cold-climate use goes through a winter durability program that includes more than just freezing the metal. We expose the benches to repeated freeze-thaw cycles, add simulated snow load on the seat and backrest, and test the hardware and coatings against road salt and moisture. In our cold chamber, temperatures drop as low as -30°F (-34°C), and the benches stay there long enough for the materials to reach that temperature throughout, not just on the surface.

What we look for is real-world failure. Powder-coated steel frames need to resist cracking or flaking when the coating contracts in the cold. Fasteners and joints have to hold their torque and alignment after repeated thermal expansion and contraction. Wood or recycled plastic slats are checked for warping, splitting, and moisture absorption. We also mount the benches on a test platform and apply a measured snow load to confirm there is no sagging or cracking under pressure. After the cold soak, we run an impact test on coated surfaces to make sure the finish doesn’t chip more easily when frozen.

We’ve also had these benches installed for full winter seasons in places like Minnesota, upstate New York, and parts of Canada, where they sit through snowplow spray, ice, and months of freeze-thaw cycles. The feedback from those locations matches our lab results: no structural failures, no significant rust creep at welded joints, and no warped slats. The finish may get dirty from salt residue, but it cleans up without losing adhesion.

So yes, if you are specifying street benches for a climate with extreme cold and snow, these have been tested for exactly that. We still recommend a simple seasonal inspection and clearing heavy ice off the seat if you want the finish to look its best, but the structure itself is proven to handle winter.
