To clean mildew off your wooden outdoor benches, start by putting on gloves for protection. Mix equal parts white vinegar and water in a spray bottle. Generously spray the solution onto the mildew-covered areas and let it sit for about an hour. The acidity of the vinegar helps kill the mildew spores. After waiting, use a soft-bristled brush or old cloth to gently scrub the surface, following the wood grain to avoid scratches. For stubborn mildew, create a paste from baking soda and water, apply it to trouble spots, and scrub gently. Rinse thoroughly with a garden hose or bucket of clean water. Never use a pressure washer as it can damage the wood fibers. After cleaning, allow the bench to dry completely in the sun. To prevent future mildew growth, consider applying a wood sealant or outdoor furniture oil. Regular maintenance like wiping down after rain and storing under cover during wet seasons will keep your benches mildew-free longer. Remember that proper airflow and sunlight exposure naturally discourage mildew growth on outdoor wood furniture.
