Common Problems and Effective Solutions for urban benches

Do your outdoor benches get very hot in the sun?

If you've ever sat on an outdoor bench on a sunny day, you know how uncomfortably hot they can get. The sun's rays can heat bench surfaces to temperatures that make them unusable. But why does this happen, and what can you do about it?

The materials your bench is made from play a huge role in how much heat it absorbs. Metal benches, particularly dark-colored ones, can become scorching hot - sometimes reaching temperatures that could even cause minor burns. Wood benches can also get quite warm, though typically not as extreme as metal. Plastic benches vary widely, with some types absorbing significant heat.

So how can you keep your outdoor seating comfortable? Consider these practical solutions:

Choose light-colored materials that reflect rather than absorb sunlight. Light gray, beige, or white finishes stay significantly cooler than dark counterparts.

Look for specific heat-resistant materials like certain types of wood (teak or cedar), specialized plastics, or powder-coated metals designed to minimize heat absorption.

Use bench covers when not in use. Simple canvas or specialized reflective covers can dramatically reduce surface temperatures.

Position benches in shaded areas or install shade structures above them. Even partial shade can make a remarkable difference in surface temperature.

Consider adding outdoor cushions that you can remove when not in use. The cushion material typically heats up less than the bench surface itself.

For existing benches that get too hot, temporary solutions include throwing a light-colored towel over the surface before sitting, or using removable slat covers that create an insulating layer.

With proper material selection and smart placement, you can enjoy your outdoor seating without worrying about uncomfortable heat. What solutions have you tried for keeping your outdoor furniture cool?
