The primary strategy is material science. We often use aluminum alloys or specially coated steels. These materials are not only durable but also have inherent properties that absorb less heat than traditional dark metals. Furthermore, many of our benches feature a heat-reflective powder coating. This special paint does more than just provide color; it's engineered to reflect a significant portion of the sun's infrared radiation, drastically reducing the surface temperature compared to an untreated piece of metal.
Thoughtful design is our second line of defense. You'll notice that our benches are frequently placed under the generous canopy of trees, utilizing natural shade to stay cool throughout the day. For sunnier spots, we install benches with slatted seats. These narrow gaps allow air to circulate freely underneath, carrying heat away and preventing it from building up. The slats also reduce the total surface area exposed directly to your skin, making them much more comfortable to sit on.
In some of our newer installations, we've begun integrating innovative materials like composite wood or vinyl. These materials mimic the beauty of wood but are engineered to remain cool to the touch and never splinter. For all our metal components, we consistently specify light, neutral colors like beige, light grey, or sage green. Dark colors, especially black, are avoided as they are notorious for absorbing intense heat.
