When installing new park benches that serve everyone in our community, we must prioritize inclusive design from the ground up. Start by ensuring proper clearance space - benches need adequate room for wheelchair users to approach and transfer safely, with at least 36 inches of clear space on one end and alongside. Look for benches with multiple seating heights between 17-19 inches to accommodate different mobility needs, and include at least one section at 19 inches for easier standing.
Incorporate armrests that provide support for rising and sitting, but ensure they don't obstruct wheelchair transfer. Durable, slip-resistant materials that withstand various weather conditions while providing comfort are essential. Consider including backrests for additional support, particularly beneficial for elderly visitors and those with mobility challenges.
Don't overlook the importance of firm, stable seating surfaces that allow for easy movement and transfers. The ideal accessible bench should blend seamlessly with other park furniture while meeting ADA guidelines. By implementing these features, we create welcoming spaces where grandparents, parents with strollers, wheelchair users, and every community member can rest comfortably together, truly making our public parks inclusive for all.
