Metal benches, typically made from aluminum or steel, are highly thermally conductive. On a scorching summer day, they can rapidly absorb solar radiation and become dangerously hot to the touch, posing a burn risk. Conversely, in freezing winter conditions, metal benches lose heat quickly and can feel intensely cold, potentially causing skin to stick to the surface. This makes their use in direct sunlight or harsh cold problematic without protective coatings or strategic placement in shaded areas.

Wood, in contrast, is a natural insulator with low thermal conductivity. On a hot day, a wooden bench will feel significantly cooler than a metal one because it absorbs heat much more slowly. It remains safe and comfortable to sit on for longer periods, even in direct sun. During cold weather, wood does not become as piercingly cold as metal, retaining a modicum of ambient warmth and providing a more tolerable seating surface.

However, material properties are not the only factors. Color plays a significant role; a dark-colored wooden bench will absorb more heat than a light-colored one, just as a dark metal bench will become hotter than a light, reflective one. Maintenance is another consideration. While metal can withstand the elements with proper powder-coating to prevent rust, wood requires regular sealing and treatment to prevent warping, cracking, or rotting from repeated thermal expansion, contraction, and moisture exposure.

In summary, for comfort and safety in temperature extremes, wood benches generally offer a superior experience. They provide a more thermally stable surface, avoiding the severe heat of metal in summer and its deep chill in winter. Metal benches, while durable, require careful design consideration—such as slatted designs that reduce surface contact or light-colored, heat-reflective finishes—to mitigate their inherent thermal challenges in public spaces.
