Common Problems and Effective Solutions for urban benches

What is the best way to remove chewing gum from your outdoor benches?

Discovering a wad of chewing gum stuck to your favorite outdoor bench can be frustrating. That sticky mess seems impossible to remove without causing damage. Fortunately, several effective and surprisingly simple methods can solve this problem, restoring your bench to its former glory.

One of the most popular and gentle techniques involves using ice. Take a few ice cubes and place them in a plastic bag. Hold this bag directly on the gum until it becomes completely frozen and brittle. This process can take several minutes. Once the gum is frozen, use a blunt object, like the edge of a butter knife or a old credit card, to gently scrape and chip the gum away. The frozen gum should flake off without leaving a sticky residue or harming the bench's surface.

For a more powerful, natural solution, white vinegar can work wonders. Soak a cloth in undiluted white vinegar and place it over the gum stain. Let it sit for 30 to 60 minutes to soften the gum. The acidity of the vinegar breaks down the sticky bonds. After it has soaked, you should be able to wipe or scrape the gum away easily. This method is excellent for wooden benches, but always test on a small, hidden area first.

Commercial products like Goo Gone or WD-40 are also highly effective. Spray a small amount directly onto the gum and let it penetrate for a few minutes as directed on the product label. These solutions are designed to dissolve sticky substances. Once the gum has loosened, wipe it away with a clean rag. Be sure to thoroughly wash the area with soapy water afterward to remove any chemical residue, especially if the bench is used for eating.

For a final clean, especially on metal or plastic benches, a little cooking spray or peanut butter can help. The oils in these products can help dissolve any remaining sticky residue. Apply, let it sit for a few minutes, and then wipe clean.

By using one of these straightforward methods—freezing, vinegar, or a commercial cleaner—you can easily remove that unsightly chewing gum and keep your outdoor benches looking clean and inviting for everyone to enjoy.
