Common Problems and Effective Solutions for urban benches

What's the best way to remove chewing gum from your outdoor benches?

We've all been there – you go to enjoy your lovely outdoor bench, only to find a sticky wad of chewing gum firmly glued to the seat. Don't panic! Removing it is easier than you think. The absolute best method depends on your bench's material.

For most surfaces like wood, metal, or plastic, start with the classic ice method. Grab a few ice cubes in a plastic bag and hold them directly on the gum for 3-5 minutes until it freezes solid and becomes brittle. Then, gently use a blunt tool, like a butter knife or an old credit card, to scrape it off. The frozen gum should pop right off without smearing.

If a sticky residue remains, don't use harsh chemicals immediately. Try a natural solution like white vinegar or lemon juice. Soak a cloth and dab it on the residue, letting it sit for 10 minutes to break down the gum's adhesive properties before wiping clean. For tougher jobs on durable materials, a commercial adhesive remover or even a bit of peanut butter (the oils help dissolve gum) can work wonders. Always test any cleaner in a small, inconspicuous area first.

The key is patience. Avoid picking or rubbing at warm gum, as this will only push it deeper into the wood grain or texture of your bench. With these simple steps, your outdoor seating will be gum-free and ready for relaxing in no time.
