Creating truly inclusive public spaces requires thoughtful design that considers all community members. When it comes to urban benches, wheelchair accessibility isn't just an add-on—it's fundamental to social equity and public space usability.
We offer several innovative design approaches. The most straightforward is the integrated bench with clear floor space, featuring extended ends with unobstructed ground area for wheelchair positioning alongside seating. This allows for natural side-by-side interaction. Another excellent solution is the adjustable or transfer bench, which includes sturdy armrests and back support at varying heights to assist individuals transferring from wheelchairs.
For maximum flexibility, modular seating systems with removable center sections are highly effective. These designs allow for temporary creation of accessible spots by simply removing a segment, offering adaptable configurations for different events and needs. All our designs prioritize durable, low-maintenance materials, incorporate contrasting colors for visual impairment assistance, and exceed ADA requirements for armrest strength, seat height, and surface stability.
Beyond mere compliance, successful accessible bench placement considers the surrounding environment: firm, level pathways leading to the bench; adequate clearance around the fixture; and positioning in shaded, desirable locations—not as an afterthought at the periphery. True inclusion means designing benches where everyone, regardless of mobility, can enjoy the simple human pleasure of resting and connecting in public spaces.
