Installing outdoor benches that are welcoming and accessible to everyone isn't just a best practice—it's often the law. Ensuring ADA compliance for your bench installation is a straightforward process when you focus on a few key requirements.
First and foremost, provide clear ground space. A clear area of at least 30 by 48 inches must be available in front of the bench. This space allows a wheelchair user to pull up alongside the bench for conversation or to transfer onto it. This area must be stable, firm, and slip-resistant, with a slope no greater than 1:48 in any direction.
Next, consider the bench's height and depth. The seat height should be between 17 and 19 inches from the ground. This range is critical for a safe and easy transfer from a wheelchair. The seat depth should be a minimum of 20 inches to provide adequate support.
If your benches include armrests, you must provide benches without them. While armrests offer support for some, they can be a barrier for others. Therefore, a portion of your benches must be armrest-free to allow for a smooth lateral transfer from a wheelchair.
Finally, be strategic about placement. Install compliant benches on an accessible route, ensuring the path to the bench is at least 36 inches wide and free of obstructions. Avoid placing benches in areas that would block pathways or reduce the required clear width.
By carefully planning the clear space, seat dimensions, armrest options, and location, you can create an inviting outdoor space that is fully ADA compliant and usable for all visitors.
