Start with regular cleaning using a mild soap and water solution with a soft brush or cloth to remove dirt, pollen, and bird droppings that can degrade the finish. Rinse thoroughly. For powder-coated or painted benches, inspect the surface annually for chips or scratches. Touch up any small damaged areas immediately with matching outdoor-grade paint to prevent rust from starting. Applying a protective automotive wax or a specialized clear coat for metal furniture once or twice a year adds a superb barrier against moisture and UV rays. Always avoid harsh abrasive cleaners or steel wool. For benches with a natural patina, you may only need to ensure they are dry. If rust spots appear, use a wire brush to remove the rust, apply a rust converter, and then touch up with paint.
