Rounded edges, chamfered corners, and thorough sanding on all surfaces – including undersides – leave fewer opportunities for splinters to form. Some cities now use thermally modified wood, where heat treatment changes the cellular structure for greater stability and moisture resistance.
For existing benches showing wear, a simple three-step treatment can restore safety: clean the surface, sand thoroughly, and apply a fresh protective coating. Community reporting systems also help maintenance teams address issues quickly.
