Discovering graffiti on your powder-coated outdoor benches is frustrating. The good news? That durable powder coating provides excellent protection, and with the right approach, you can often restore your bench to its original state. The golden rule is to act quickly and avoid harsh methods that can damage the finish.
Start with the gentlest solution. Mix a few drops of mild dish soap with warm water. Using a soft, non-abrasive cloth or sponge, gently wipe the graffiti. For fresh marks, this may be all you need. Rinse thoroughly with clean water.
If soapy water fails, move to a specialized graffiti remover. Crucially, you must choose a product labeled safe for powder coating. Test any cleaner on a small, inconspicuous area first. Apply the recommended remover, let it sit for the specified time, and gently agitate with a soft-bristle brush. Never use steel wool, scrapers, or abrasive pads.
For stubborn residues, a dedicated citrus-based or biodegradable graffiti cleaner is often effective and less harsh. Always follow the manufacturer's instructions precisely.
What NOT to do: Avoid acetone, nail polish remover, paint thinner, or aggressive solvents. Never use a pressure washer on a high setting close to the surface, as it can etch the coating. Harsh abrasives will permanently scratch and dull the beautiful powder-coated finish.
After cleaning, rinse the bench completely and dry it with a soft towel. Consider applying a protective automotive wax or a sealant designed for powder coating to add an extra barrier against future vandalism and the elements. With prompt and careful action, your benches can look great for years to come.
