A classic cast iron or steel bench with a wooden slat seat, if well-maintained, can often reach that 20-25 year mark. Modern powder-coated steel or recycled plastic benches are designed to resist rust and rot, aiming for similar longevity. Solid hardwood benches, like those made from oak or teak, can last for decades, sometimes even longer than their metal frames.
But my lifespan isn't just about my birth certificate. It's shaped by my environment. Benches in a calm, sheltered garden face very different challenges than those on a windy coastal pier.
