Avoid pressure washers on softwoods as they can damage the fibers. Annually, inspect for splinters and apply a fresh coat of sealant or outdoor-grade oil to protect against moisture and UV rays. For metal benches, regular wiping with a damp cloth is often sufficient. Address rust spots immediately by scrubbing with a wire brush, applying a rust converter, and repainting with rust-inhibitive paint. For plastic or composite benches, a simple wash with soapy water and a rinse with a garden hose works well. Avoid abrasive cleaners. General maintenance for all types includes tightening loose bolts and screws seasonally, checking for structural stability, and promptly cleaning graffiti with appropriate, non-damaging removers.
