Common Problems and Effective Solutions for urban benches

How do I clean moss or mildew off of wooden outdoor benches?

Seeing green moss or black mildew on your wooden bench? Don't worry – it's a common issue that's easily fixed. First, put on gloves and safety glasses. Brush off loose debris with a stiff-bristled brush. For a natural clean, mix equal parts white vinegar and water in a spray bottle. Generously spray the solution onto the affected areas and let it sit for 15-20 minutes to penetrate and kill the growth. For tougher stains, you can use a oxygen bleach solution (follow package directions), which is gentler on wood than chlorine bleach. Scrub the surface gently with your brush, following the wood grain. Rinse thoroughly with a garden hose. Never use a pressure washer, as it can damage the wood fibers. Let the bench dry completely in the sun. To prevent regrowth, consider applying a wood sealant or protective oil designed for outdoor use. Regular cleaning and keeping the bench in a sunny, well-ventilated spot will help keep it looking great for seasons to come.
