Seeing mildew on your favorite wooden outdoor bench can be a downer. Don't worry, cleaning it is easier than you think! For a simple, effective method, white distilled vinegar is your best friend. It's a natural mildew killer. Just mix equal parts vinegar and water in a spray bottle. Generously spray the solution onto the mildewy areas and let it sit for about an hour. Then, scrub the surface with a stiff-bristled brush (not wire, to avoid damaging the wood). Finally, rinse thoroughly with a garden hose. Let the bench dry completely in the sun, which also helps kill remaining spores.
For tougher cases, you can use a mild solution of oxygen bleach (following package directions) or a dedicated wood cleaner. A low-pressure power washer can also be highly effective, but keep the pressure low and the nozzle moving to avoid gouging the wood. Always test any cleaner on a small, hidden area first.
To prevent mildew from coming back, try to keep your benches in a sunny, well-ventilated spot. Using a water-repellent sealant designed for outdoor wood creates a protective barrier. Regular cleaning and ensuring the wood dries quickly after rain are your best defenses for keeping those benches looking great season after season.
