Living in a damp climate can be a challenge for outdoor furniture, but with the right care, you can keep your garden benches mold-free. The key is a combination of proper material selection, proactive sealing, and consistent maintenance.
Start by choosing the right bench. Naturally rot-resistant woods like cedar, teak, or redwood are excellent choices. For other woods or existing benches, a high-quality waterproof sealant is your best defense. Apply a fresh coat annually, or even biannually in very wet areas, to create a barrier against moisture.
Regular cleaning is non-negotiable. Mix a solution of one part white vinegar to four parts water, or use a mild soap like dish detergent. Scrub the bench gently with a soft brush to remove dirt and spores before they become mold. Always let the bench dry completely in the sun after cleaning or rain.
Improving airflow is crucial. Avoid placing benches directly against walls or under dense, dripping foliage. If possible, position them in sunny, breezy spots. For long periods of wet weather, consider using a fitted, breathable waterproof cover. Ensure the cover is vented to prevent trapping humidity underneath.
For minor mold, the vinegar solution is a great first step. For tougher mildew, a diluted oxygen bleach solution (following manufacturer instructions) is effective and gentler on plants and wood than chlorine bleach. Remember, prevention is always easier than cure. A simple, consistent routine of sealing, cleaning, and ensuring good airflow will preserve your benches for years of enjoyment, no matter how damp the air gets.
