Seeing mildew on your beloved wooden garden bench can be disheartening, but don't worry—cleaning it is easier than you think. The simplest and most effective method uses items you likely already have at home.
For light to moderate mildew, create a solution of equal parts white vinegar and water in a spray bottle. Vinegar is a natural and potent mildew killer. Generously spray the solution onto the affected areas of the dry bench and let it sit for about an hour. Then, using a stiff-bristled brush (not wire, as it can damage the wood), scrub the mildew away. Rinse thoroughly with a garden hose and let the bench dry completely in the sun.
For heavier buildup, a pressure washer can be a quick solution. Use a wide, low-pressure tip and keep the nozzle moving to avoid gouging the soft wood. Always test on a small, inconspicuous area first.
Once your bench is clean and bone-dry, the final, crucial step is prevention. Apply a water-repellent sealant or a bench-specific outdoor wood oil. This protective barrier will significantly slow down mildew's return, keeping your bench looking fresh season after season. Regular cleaning with a mild soap solution can also help prevent future growth.
