Installing a permanent park bench is a great way to add lasting seating to your garden or community space. However, ensuring the ground is perfectly level is crucial for the bench's stability, safety, and longevity. An uneven installation can lead to wobbling, structural stress, and even tipping. Here’s a simple, step-by-step guide to check your site.
First, clear the area of debris, rocks, and vegetation. You need a clean, firm surface to assess. The most reliable tool is a long spirit level (a 4-foot level is ideal). Place it directly on the ground where the bench legs or base will sit. Check for levelness along the length and across the width. The bubble should be centered between the lines. For larger benches, use a straight, long board and place the level on top of it to span a wider area.
If you don't have a long level, a simple water test can work. Place a clear, water-filled tube with both ends open at the proposed leg locations. The water level at both ends will equalize, showing if the points are level. Alternatively, use a string line: tie a string tightly between two stakes at the proposed bench height and use a line level to check.
What's level enough? A slight slope for drainage (about 1-2% away from the center) is acceptable and even recommended to prevent water pooling. However, any noticeable tilt that makes the bench feel unsteady is not acceptable.
If the ground is uneven, you have options. For minor adjustments, add or remove compacted gravel or sand. For significant slopes, you may need to excavate the high side or build up the low side with a compacted base. The most permanent solution is to pour a small concrete footing or slab for the bench to sit on, ensuring it is leveled during the pour.
