For a simple, natural clean, white vinegar is your top choice. Just mix equal parts white vinegar and water in a spray bottle. Generously spray the mildewed areas until thoroughly wet. Let it sit for at least 30 minutes to an hour; the acetic acid in the vinegar kills the mildew spores. Then, scrub the surface with a soft-bristled brush or an old cloth. Rinse thoroughly with a garden hose. For tougher stains, make a paste with baking soda and a little water. Apply it to the stubborn spots, let it sit for 15 minutes, then scrub and rinse. Always work in a shaded area to prevent the cleaner from drying too fast. To prevent mildew from returning, try to keep benches dry and store them indoors during wet seasons if possible.
