Watching your favorite garden bench succumb to rust over the winter is disheartening. Fortunately, with some proactive care, you can shield your outdoor furniture from the harsh elements. The key is a combination of thorough cleaning, protective coatings, and smart storage.
Start by giving your bench a deep clean before the first frost. Remove any dirt, mildew, or existing light rust with a stiff brush, mild soap, and water. For tougher rust spots, use a wire brush or sandpaper. Rinse thoroughly and let the bench dry completely for at least 24-48 hours; this is crucial, as sealing over moisture traps it in.
Next, apply a protective barrier. For metal benches, a fresh coat of rust-inhibitive primer and paint offers the best defense. Alternatively, a clear rust-resistant sealant or wax can protect the metal while preserving its natural look. For wrought iron, specialized paints and sealants are available. Don't forget to treat any screws or bolts as well.
If possible, move benches to a sheltered location like a garage, shed, or covered patio. If they must stay outside, invest in a high-quality, breathable waterproof cover designed for outdoor furniture. Ensure it's secured to prevent wind from whipping it around and causing abrasion. Avoid plastic tarps that trap condensation, which can accelerate rusting.
Throughout the winter, periodically check under the cover, brush off heavy snow to prevent weight stress and excess moisture, and ensure the cover remains intact. A little effort in the fall guarantees your benches will be ready for relaxing in the spring, rust-free and beautiful for seasons to come.
