Common Problems and Effective Solutions for urban benches

What's the best way to store cushions for my garden benches during the winter?

As winter approaches, protecting your garden bench cushions is key to ensuring they look fresh and last for seasons to come. The best method involves a few critical steps: thorough cleaning, complete drying, and proper storage.

First, always start with a deep clean. Check the manufacturer's label. For most fabrics, use a mild soap solution and a soft brush to gently scrub away dirt, pollen, and mildew. Rinse thoroughly with a hose and let them air dry completely in the sun. This step is non-negotiable; storing damp cushions guarantees mold.

Once bone-dry, choose your storage strategy. An ideal location is a cool, dry, and dark place like a garage, shed, or basement. Avoid attics or damp spaces. For extra protection, place cushions in large plastic storage bins with lids, or use specialty vacuum-seal storage bags to minimize space and keep pests out. If you must stack them, place heavier cushions at the bottom and put a breathable cotton sheet between layers to prevent color transfer and moisture trapping.

Alternatively, if indoor space is limited, consider using a high-quality, waterproof outdoor storage box placed on a raised surface away from direct ground moisture. Never simply throw a tarp over cushions left outside; this traps condensation and causes more harm than good.

By investing a little time in proper autumn care, you'll save money and enjoy your comfortable, vibrant cushions for many more springs.
