Our approach to inclusive bench design begins with a fundamental belief: public spaces should welcome everyone. We move beyond mere compliance to embrace universal design principles, creating seating that genuinely accommodates people of all ages, sizes, and abilities. This means integrating benches at varying heights to serve both adults and children, and individuals who use wheelchairs. We carefully design armrests and back supports that provide stability for those who need assistance sitting down or standing up, while ensuring the materials are comfortable and thermally appropriate for different climates.
Crucially, we prioritize clear space for wheelchair access, not just beside but often partially underneath the seating surface, allowing for seamless side-transfer. We select durable, low-maintenance materials that are tactilely distinct and visually contrasting to aid users with visual impairments. Every curve, edge, and joint is considered for safety and ease of use. The goal is never an "add-on" accessibility feature, but a cohesive design where inclusivity is inherent. By engaging with communities and disability advocates throughout our design process, we ensure our benches don't just meet standards—they foster connection, rest, and dignity for every individual in the shared public realm.
