In urban spaces where pigeons are plentiful, standard benches can quickly become unusable due to droppings and nesting. To combat this, several effective anti-bird features are integrated into modern bench designs. A primary solution is the installation of discreet stainless steel bird spikes or posts along the bench's backrest and armrests. These physically prevent birds from landing or perching without harming them. Another popular design uses a steeply sloped seat or backrest. When a bench surface is angled beyond a bird's comfort zone for gripping, they simply cannot settle. Materials also play a key role. Benches made from smooth, non-porous metals or plastics are less attractive to pigeons as they offer poor grip and are easier to clean. Some designs incorporate mild, harmless repellent gels on key landing spots, creating a sticky sensation birds dislike. For a more integrated approach, benches may feature minimalist, wire-mesh styles that leave no comfortable flat surface. The most effective strategies often combine these elements—like a sloped, smooth metal seat with strategic spike strips—creating durable, low-maintenance seating that keeps public spaces clean and accessible for people.
