Common Problems and Effective Solutions for urban benches

How much space should we leave between benches for walkways and accessibility?

When designing a public park, campus, or commercial plaza, one of the most practical yet often overlooked details is the spacing between benches for walkways and accessibility. Getting this right ensures everyone—including people using wheelchairs, walkers, or pushing strollers—can move safely and comfortably.

The short answer: For a standard walkway that allows two people to pass or one wheelchair user, leave a minimum of 48 inches (122 cm) of clear space between the front edge of a bench and any obstruction (like another bench, a wall, or a planter). If you want two wheelchairs to pass each other, aim for at least 60 inches (152 cm). That’s the ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act) recommended width.

But spacing isn’t just about the pathway width. Consider the bench orientation. If benches face each other across a walkway, the distance between them should be at least 4 to 6 feet to avoid crowding. For benches placed side by side along the same walkway, leave at least 2 to 3 feet of gap between them so people can sit without feeling cramped.

Also think about the “landing zone” in front of each bench. A wheelchair or mobility device needs an accessible route to park next to the bench. Allow a 30 by 48 inch clear space beside at least one end of each bench, with a firm surface that’s level. This space should not overlap with the main walkway clearance.

For high-traffic areas like transit stops or market squares, err on the wider side. I recommend a minimum of 6 feet of walkway clear width when benches line both sides. This prevents bottlenecks, especially during peak hours.

Lastly, test your layout. If you can push a standard wheelchair (26 inches wide) through the gap without scraping the bench legs or nearby shrubs, you’re on the right track. Remember: accessibility is not a luxury—it’s a baseline. Good spacing makes your space feel open, welcoming, and usable for everyone.
