Great question – and one that a lot of people overlook when buying benches, especially for outdoor use. The short answer is: it depends on the manufacturer, the material, and the intended use of the bench.
If you’re looking at a basic wooden bench from a big-box store, chances are it may come with a light coat of sealant, but often not a deep, long-lasting protective treatment. Many mass-produced benches are only pre-treated with a thin layer of varnish, wax, or stain to make them look good in the showroom, but that coating isn’t designed to hold up against harsh weather or heavy use.
On the other hand, higher-end or specialty outdoor benches (like those made from teak, cedar, or pressure-treated pine) are often pre-treated with a sealant or a penetrating oil that helps resist moisture, UV damage, and mildew. For instance, teak benches sometimes come with a factory-applied sealer that protects the oil-rich wood from graying. But here’s the catch: even that coating will fade over time, and you’ll need to reapply it.
Metal or plastic benches are usually pre-treated with powder coatings or UV-stabilizers, which are more durable. Powder coating is essentially a baked-on protective layer that resists rust and fading much better than liquid paint.
So, should you trust that the factory pre-treatment is enough? Real talk: no. Even if a bench says “sealed” or “coated,” I strongly recommend adding your own sealant – especially if the bench lives outdoors. Weather, rain, and sun will break down those factory coatings much faster than you’d expect.
What to do: if you’re unsure, try the water test – sprinkle a few drops on the bench surface. If the water beads up and doesn’t soak in quickly, there’s some kind of sealant present. If it absorbs right away, it’s untreated or the coating has worn off.
In short: many benches are pre-treated, but not all treatments are created equal. Always ask the seller for specific details, and plan to maintain the coating yourself every year or two. That’s the only way to keep your bench looking great and lasting longer.
