If you’ve ever sat on a park bench only to discover a fresh (or dried) bird dropping, you know the frustration. But here’s the real dilemma: how do you remove it without scratching the paint, stripping the sealant, or staining the wood? The answer is simpler than you think.
First, always act fast when possible. Fresh droppings are acidic and can etch into finishes if left in the sun. Use a soft cloth or sponge—never a scrub brush or abrasive pad. For wooden benches, lightly dampen the cloth with plain water and blot the area. Avoid soaking the wood, as moisture can warp it or lift the varnish.
For stubborn, dried stains, mix a few drops of mild dish soap with warm water. Apply it gently with a microfiber cloth, working from the outside of the stain inward to avoid spreading. If the bench is painted metal, you can use a very diluted vinegar solution (1 part vinegar to 4 parts water), but rinse immediately with clean water to prevent corrosion. Never use bleach, ammonia, or harsh chemical cleaners—they’ll damage the finish faster than bird droppings will.
After cleaning, dry the spot thoroughly with a clean, soft towel. If the bench is sealed wood, consider applying a thin layer of furniture wax or outdoor sealant to restore protection. For long-term prevention, a quick wipe-down every few days keeps droppings from baking in.
