If you’ve noticed green or black mold creeping across your outdoor bench, don’t panic—and don’t reach for bleach or a pressure washer just yet. Those harsh methods might remove the mold, but they can also strip paint, stain, or sealant, leaving your bench looking worse than before. Here’s how to clean mold off an outdoor bench without damaging the finish.
First, choose your cleaning solution wisely. A gentle mix of white vinegar and water (1:1 ratio) works wonders on mold. Vinegar kills most mold species naturally and is safe for most finished surfaces. For stains that won’t budge, make a paste of baking soda and water—it’s mildly abrasive but won’t scratch sealed wood or metal. Avoid bleach if your bench has a protective coating, as it can cause discoloration and degrade the finish over time.
Apply the solution the right way. Spray the vinegar mixture onto the moldy areas and let it sit for 10–15 minutes. This gives it time to penetrate and break down the mold. Then, use a soft-bristle brush or a microfiber cloth to gently scrub in the direction of the grain (if wood) or with light pressure (if metal or plastic). Don’t use steel wool or abrasive pads, as they will leave scratches that damage the finish.
Rinse and dry thoroughly. Use a hose with a gentle spray nozzle to rinse off all cleaning residue. Standing water can cause new mold growth or damage the finish, so dry the bench with a clean towel or let it air-dry in direct sunlight if possible. If your bench has a wooden finish, consider applying a thin coat of outdoor furniture wax or sealant after it’s completely dry to protect it from future mold.
For stubborn mold, repeat or switch to a mild soap. If mold remains, try a few drops of dish soap mixed with warm water. Apply with a soft sponge, scrub gently, and rinse. Persistent spots may need a second vinegar treatment. The key is patience—scrubbing too hard is the fastest way to ruin a finish.
By sticking to mild, non-abrasive cleaners and soft tools, you can restore your outdoor bench to its clean, mold-free glory while keeping its finish intact. Regular cleaning every few months will also help prevent mold from coming back.
