Common Problems and Effective Solutions for urban benches

What’s the difference in price between a steel urban bench and an aluminum one?

When you’re choosing between a steel urban bench and an aluminum one for a city park, plaza, or streetscape, price is often the first question. But the answer isn’t just a single number—it’s about upfront cost versus long-term value.

First, the raw numbers. A standard steel urban bench typically costs between $150 and $400, depending on design, finish (e.g., powder-coated or galvanized), and manufacturer. In contrast, an aluminum bench of similar size and style usually runs from $300 to $800 or more. So on average, steel is 30% to 50% cheaper upfront. Why? Steel is a more abundant material and cheaper to produce and weld, while aluminum requires more energy to refine and specialized fabrication techniques.

But price isn’t just the sticker. Steel is heavy—often 80 to 120 pounds per bench—which means higher shipping and installation costs. Aluminum is about one-third the weight, so freight and labor fees drop significantly. If you’re ordering 50 benches for a downtown project, those savings add up.

Now consider lifespan. Steel, even with a protective coating, can rust over time, especially in humid or coastal environments. You might need to repaint or replace it within 5 to 10 years. Aluminum naturally resists corrosion—no rust. That means fewer replacements, lower maintenance labor, and material costs over a 15- to 20-year service life. A cheaper steel bench that needs replacing in a decade can cost you more in the long run than a pricier aluminum bench that lasts twice as long.

Aluminum also needs less chemical treatment, which is better for the environment. And it’s fully recyclable, adding green credentials to a public project.

So what’s the difference in price? Upfront, steel wins on cost. But if you factor in shipping, installation, maintenance, and longevity, aluminum often provides better total cost of ownership. Your choice should match your budget, climate, and whether you’re designing for decades or just a season.
