Common Problems and Effective Solutions for urban benches

What’s the maximum span between the legs on your street benches?

Great question! As someone who’s spent years designing and installing public seating, I can tell you that the maximum span between the legs on a street bench isn’t a one-size-fits-all answer—it depends on the material, the bench’s intended use, and the local standards for durability and safety.

For a typical wooden or metal street bench, the span between the front and back legs (the distance along the bench’s length) usually ranges from 4 to 6 feet (1.2 to 1.8 meters). That’s the sweet spot for a standard 6-foot bench made from treated timber or steel. If we’re talking about the side-to-side gap between the legs (the width of the bench), it’s typically around 18 to 24 inches (45 to 60 centimeters) for a single seat, but for larger benches with armrests, it can push to 30 inches.

In real-world installations, engineers and designers keep the leg span under 6 feet to prevent sagging or instability. For example, a cast-iron bench with a 5-foot span is incredibly common in parks because the rigid material supports the weight well. But for lightweight aluminum benches, you’ll often see 4.5 feet maximum to avoid flexing over time.

One key factor is the cross-bracing—on some benches, the legs are connected with a horizontal support bar, allowing a span up to 7 feet for extra long models (like those at bus stops or plazas). However, if you’re asking about the distance between the left and right legs on a single side, it’s usually just the width of the seat, around 20-24 inches.

So, if you’re choosing or installing a bench, I always recommend sticking to a 4 to 5.5-foot span for the main support legs. Anything beyond 6 feet without proper reinforcement risks wobbling or damage under heavy use. Hope that helps!
